Make with Me : Macrame Wreath

Looking for some DIY decor this season? Today I’m sharing all of the resources for making this super simple and cute wreath (only two different knots are required!).

I’m always inspired by the macrame instagram accounts that we follow, so it was probably during a late-night instagram binge when I came across a knotted wreath. Since then, I’ve experimented with a few designs and have found that by knowing just a few knots, it’s really easy to make a beautiful decoration for the coming season.

Macrame Wreath Details

Like our previous make-with-me posts, I’m sharing the resources and some general information about a project so that you can make your own. Even though this post doesn’t contain a step-by-step tutorial, don’t worry, you’ll find a link and video below with enough details to make your own uber-cute little wreath.

My final wreath has an 11 inch diameter. It’s small and cute, but you’d definitely want something bigger for your front door.

Materials:

Modifications:

I really liked the double row of points in the video below, but I knew shat I wanted to make a few changes.

  • I wanted to use a natural colored cord; that said, some of these colors would make beautiful holiday wreaths!
  • I didn’t want to include the “berries” from the instructional video, but those were easy to exclude without changing the design too much

Then, after some experimentation, there were other changes that I made to accommodate my hoop size.

  • hoop size: I used a smaller, 5-inch hoop; the original design calls for an 8-inch hoop
  • point number: my design has 7 points in the inner and outer sections; the original design has 11 points
  • number of chords: each of my 7 sections is created from 7 cords, required 49 cords total; the original design requires 6 cords for each of the 11 sections (66 cords total)
  • cord orientation: notice that each point uses six cords and 1/2 of a cord on each size (to get an even seven)
  • inner points: my design has 4 rows of clove hitch knots on each side of the inner point, with that 4th row on each side coming from the half of the cord that is split between each point; the original design had 3 rows of clove hitch knots on each side of its point
  • outer points: I followed the original design with the 4 square knots in the center of the outer point, but then I finished with just one row of clove hitch knots rather than two rows

And that’s it! It sounds like a lot of modifications, but once you follow along and make one wreath, you’ll see that modifying the designs does not take much brain power.

If you need some inspiration and would like to find more wreath variations, in addition to using “macrame wreath” as a search term, try “macrame mandala“. Results from the two searches will overlap, but not completely.

The evenings are long and dark, so you’ll have plenty of time to tie a few knots, and we’d love to see your final projects. Tag us wherever you post them! xo
