Good Stuff : Green Cleaning

In addition to sharing our resolutions this month, we’re also going to share some of the good habits that we’ve picked up over the years. We try many things, but these are the ones that stuck.

A few years ago, I made a concerted effort to cut back on chemical-based cleaning supplies. One of the main resources I’ve turned to is this book. While spring cleaning gets all the glory, for me, the post-holiday clean-up and start of the new year is when I’m really inspired to give our house a good cleaning.

This book is a great green-cleaning reference book because it’s packed with formulas for cleaning everything from your shower to your wood floors. The recipes are relatively simple and very effective, and for many categories, multiple recipes are given, so you can pick the one that you like best.

I consistently use DIY cleaners for my:

    • shower
    • wood floors
    • dusting wood furniture
    • all-purpose cleaner
    • windows

I refer to The Naturally Clean Home for all of the above except windows, because once I found Melissa Maker’s method (see video below), I’ve never needed anything else.

If you’d like to get started with DIY cleaning supplies, here are some of our previous posts:

And, I believe that the quality of my supplies make a big difference in both how often I want to clean and how happy I am doing it. Here are a few of my essentials:

I’m the most basic house-cleaner out there. I like to eliminate the grunge, but I don’t want to spend a lot of time or money doing it. Fortunately, with a handful of supplies, I’ve been able to drastically reduce the number of chemical cleaners that we’re using, and our house is still nice and clean. If you’re thinking about making the change, I think you’ll find this book to be a great resource!
