The Perfect Summertime Lunch Box

Are your kids going to camp this summer? Mine are, and I think I’ve hit upon the perfect lunch box for our summer adventures. It’s one that will continue to serve us well this school year.

I recently bought bento boxes for the boys’ lunches and was looking for fabric lunch boxes that would fit the boxes AND fit an ice pack or two. Then I found PackIt lunch bags. Two sides of these bags have built-in ice packs. You stick the whole bag in the freezer overnight and by morning it’s frozen and ready for packing.

I wasn’t sure which size would be best for us, so I bought one commuter pack and one of their “classic” bags. In the end both bags work well with our bento boxes. They have room to spare, which is great when their day calls for lunch and a couple of snacks. The commuter bag opens from the top whereas the classic bags unzip so that one side fully flips open.

The commuter bag is noticeably larger than the classic pack. It would definitely hold plenty of food for an adult that’s packing food for a full day at work. I’ve also found it to be the perfect size for our park picnics.

*We’re in the middle of a major heat wave, and I’ve found that the packs aren’t able to stay cool for the full 7 hrs that they’re outside. Luckily there’s enough extra room in them to add a few ice packs, but I’m guess that this won’t be necessary during the school year.

We’ve only been using these bags for a few weeks, but I’m already a big fan!
