Mocha Lip Scrub

We first posted this just last fall, when coffee was our ingredient of the season, but we’re re-posting it again today, because maybe you’ll need some soft and supple lips tonight?

Have you tried a lip scrub yet? Lip scrubs contain a bit of texture to gently exfoliate your lips, and they’re perfect for this time of year when our lips can get dry from the cool winter air.

Giving your lips a gentle scrub will remove that dry outer layer, leaving you with soft smooth lips that are the perfect canvas for a bit of lipstick. Why do you need that? Cause it’s holiday party season! Have fun.

Mocha Lip Scrub

This scrub is a simple of mix of four edible ingredients : coffee, sugar, cocoa powder, coconut oil. Yes, you could lick your lips clean, and no one will be the wiser ;-).

Technically, you can make this scrub with used or fresh coffee grounds. And as you know, we are all about re-using whenever possible. Our only concern about used grounds is the added water – if you ever add water to a skin potion, you’re creating an environment where mold can grow. So whip up a batch with used grounds if you’ll use it within a week (and maybe keep it in the fridge between uses). BUT if you want this to sit on your vanity or give it as a gift, then used dry and fresh coffee grounds.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp freshly ground coffee
  • 2 Tbsp white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cocoa powder
  • coconut oil (liquified or solid, just melt the solid slightly to make blending easier)
  • empty containers for storage

How-to

  • Blend the dry ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Add a touch of coconut oil, and mix. Keep adding coconut oil in small doses until everything is well-blended, but don’t overdue the oil. I like to add just enough so that the dry ingredients stick together but do not run down my finger. You don’t want this dripping off of your lips and onto your clothes as you exfoliate.
  • To use, just scoop out a small dollop with your finger, and gently scrub your lips using a circular motion. Remove any excess scrub, and then apply a layer of lip balm to protect your pout.
  • This blend will fill about three of the little containers shown below.

This simple scrub can be mixed up in minutes, and would make the perfect gift or stocking stuffer when paired with lip balm or lipstick. Looking for a beautiful lipstick for giving? We love ILIA’s options, and they’re made with ingredients that we’re comfortable putting on our lips. And we’re bonkers for the packaging (and intense color!) on this Frida Kahlo lipstick by Republic Cosmetics.
