Homemade Yogurt in the Instapot

Hey there, it’s time for a very irregular installment of some of my favorite things!

I’ve been using my Instantpot to make yogurt this winter, and we are hooked, as in multiple-batches-per-week hooked.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the results are just like using using our yogurt maker. So why switch?

The benefits of using the Insta-pot over the yogurt maker are many. With the Insta-pot we can make larger batches. With our jar + lid combos (shared below), I love that we can make personal-sized servings while eliminating the waste that comes from buying individual cups of yogurt. And I’m always happy when I can eliminate a one-use appliance like the yogurt maker for something that is so multipurpose!

Homemade Yogurt in the Instapot

The beauty of homemade yogurt is that you can customize it to your preferences (think different milks, thicknesses, flavors). I don’t have any experience with non-dairy milk options, but here’s what we do for a traditional dairy yogurt:

  • pour about a 1/2 gallon of whole milk into the Instantpot
  • add 6-8 oz of plain yogurt (this is your starter bacteria)
  • set the instapot to yogurt mode and let it ferment for 8 or so hours; the longer it sits, the tangier your yogurt will be, so this is when you can do a bit of taste testing
  • pour into jars and refrigerate

Yogurt Storage

I like to use the Oui glass jars for single-serving storage, pairing them with these simple plastic lids. BUT, since I got my lids, there are now many other fantastic options. These silicon ones look like they’re better quality than the plastic one, and I look the look of these bamboo lids for dry goods storage.

Buy Nothing Group

Although it’s delicious, we didn’t eat all of that oui yogurt to get our jars. Instead, I was able get get them through my local Buy Nothing Group! … and what am I going to do with our old, but still perfect yogurt maker? Pass it along to someone else in the group!
