Christmas Candids: A few tips!

I just watched a video of people unwrapping puppies and I’ve never been more grateful for family photographers.  We all want to capture the cheer and joy during holidays and gatherings so here are a few tips for photographing this year’s festivities.  First off, it really doesn’t matter if you’re shooting with a phone, point and shoot or a DSLR, these tips will work for you. Second, have fun while photographing, try to capture candid moments and remember to put down your camera for a few hours and really enjoy the moment as it is unfolding.  Happy Holidays!

White Balance

  • Check it!  The camera’s default setting is Auto White Balance, but that may not be the best option for the scene at hand.  Change the white balance to Incandescent or Fluorescent to see which setting works best for your home and lights.  If that sounded like Chinese to you, check out this Photography 101 post.

Point of Focus

  • Pick one.  There is SO much going on at the holidays that you might see cookies, presents, lights and decorations all in one scene.  Decide what the point of focus is for your photo and zone in on that.  If it’s a little boy unwrapping a present, the photo is about his expression not the christmas tree behind him so frame the boy, not the entire living room.  Think about what you want to stand out about the photo and choose an angle that will highlight the subject not distract from it.

Shooting on Burst Mode

  • Anytime you’re shooting action like unwrapping presents, a New Year’s toast, someone blowing out candles, shoot on burst mode.  It might also be called continuous mode and depending on your camera and settings it will take anywhere from a couple to a dozen shots each second.  Shooting on burst mode is the perfect way to capture every expression especially in candid situations.

Out-of-focus Christmas Lights

  • Lots of folks are always asking me how to achieve a bokeh effect with Christmas lights – good news, it is super easy! Simply choose a low aperture a.k.a. fstop number and that will effectively blur whatever you are not focusing on, in this case it’s the lights.  An example?  If I’m photographing my nephew in front of our Christmas tree, I want the tree to be visible so I can set the scene, yet he is the main focus of the photograph so I would set my aperture to f2.8 and focus on his sweet little face.  The tree behind him would be out of focus and therefore the lights would attain the bokeh effect. In the photos above, all three photos are of the same scene, but the light circles grow bigger as they become more out of focus. I simply pointed my camera at a Christmas tree and turned my focusing ring just out of focus, a little out of focus and majorly out of focus.

Photographing Outdoor Lights and Decorations

  • There are a few things that are relatively difficult to photograph.  Outdoor Christmas lights are one of them.  You basically have a really bright object (the lights) against a really dark object (the house and sky), which makes a tricky situation to expose properly.    I feel like we have all been here before.  You see an amazingly gorgeous sunset and you think, ‘family photo opp!’ only to be completely disappointed by the results.  You either end up silhouetted against the sun or you use the flash and hate the unnatural outcome.  It’s the same type of deal, dark and light competing for a proper exposure.
  • Head outside during twilight when the sky is nice and blue – right after sunset, but before it gets dark.  You have a small window of time for these shots, only about twenty minutes.  Set up your camera and tripod.  Choose a low ISO number like 400.  Also choose a slow shutter speed somewhere around 1/25 of a second or slower.  Set your aperture according to your light meter and then experiment from there.  I usually set up the shot, ISO and shutter speed and then take a dozen shots adjusting my aperture by one stop (click) each time.  Then I’ll scroll through the shots, decide which I like the best and set the aperture accordingly.  This time I’ll play with the shutter speed a little bit by adjusting it a tiny bit faster or a tiny bit slower.  That way you get a good variety of exposures.

Felt Ornaments

Hey! I looked at our calendar and realized that we have entered a week of Christmas crafting making on the blog! This isn’t necessarily gift crafting, just more little projects to decorate the tree, your walls, to send off in the mail (technically, I guess that’s giving), and maybe we’ll even have something to eat or drink by the time the week’s complete.

Today I’m talking about the felt ornaments and wreath that were pictured in this post. Both of these ideas came from my Christmas board on Pinterest, but unfortunately the links associated with the pins won’t take you to the original source for attribution. You’ll see that I’ve pinned many different felt ornaments, and I’m thinking that over the next few years I may make quite a few as we become a house with two little boys! Felt ornaments are just so kid-friendly, with a big loop, they are easy for little hands to hang and pull off the tree, and there’s so little investment in terms of both time (the the case of the ones I’ve made) and money, that I don’t mind if little A throws them around a bit while playing. Plus, they look really cute.

For today’s ornaments, I was first inspired by this photo. In addition to the stars, I added a few hearts with white stitching to our collection, inspired by these red felt ornaments. I personalized the stars by using a red blanket stitch around the edges, and I drastically simplified my hearts from the inspiration photo, eliminating the stuffing and choosing simple stitches that would follow the hearts’ edges.

Supplies & Tools

  • Felt
  • embroidery floss
  • thin jute
  • sewing needle
  • scissors
  • shape template

Instructions

  • Find or draw your template. For my templates, I did a Google image search for  “heart clipart” and “star clipart”. I was able to find images that included hearts and stars of different sizes, so I printed them out and cut out the size that I liked for each.
  • Trace your template on the felt and cut out two of the same shape. As you can see from my template, I traced around it with a marker. Having those marker images on your felt isn’t a problem, because you can have the marked sides face inwards.
  • Sew your pieces together. Use three stands of embroidery floss for the embroidery. Holding the two felt pieces together (marked sides in), use your favorite stitch to hand sew the pieces together. I used blanket stitch for all of the stars, but was more creative with the hears, using blanket stitch,  back stitch, and a simple combination of long and short running stitches to create the third.
  • Add your loop for hanging. I used skinny jute for the hanging loops. You can find this in craft stores, and it’s usually sold in a smaller quantity than the bigger balls of fat jute (you can see the packaging in my supplies photo). The jute will not pull through your felt as easily as the embroidery floss. I found that it was easiest to thread the jute through the eye of my needle, pierce the felt with my needle, and then move the needle in circles to create a larger hole (but one that is still snug) for the jute to fit through.

While we were so excited to put the tree up, after the lights were hung it looked so pretty that we’ve been really lazy about adding more decorations. But a few nights ago we were looking for one more activity for little A before bath time, so I pulled out these ornaments and a few others for him to add to the tree. The pictures aren’t great, but I think you can tell that he was excited to get in on the tree action (clapping after each ornament was hung), and now it’s become a daily activity to remove and rehang a few.

In addition to making their way onto the tree, I used one of the stars in our new wreath. Again, I’m borrowing and modifying this idea from something brilliant I saw online.

Supplies

  • grapevine wreath
  • white bottle brush trees
  • moss roll (you can see the packaging below)
  • hot glue gun & glue

How cute is that wreath? It came together easily with a few supplies from the craft store. The project is relatively self-explanatory : wrap the moss around your wreath, slipping it under a few of the larger vines if possible (this just takes a bit of wiggling). Glue the trees where you would like them. Tie a star ornament from the top of your wreath. Bam!

Once I hung this and the green garland above the door, I realized that we have a lot of brown and green going on out on the front porch. Maybe this year it would have been nice to go with something brighter? But I’m loving the peaceful look every time we walk in the door.

It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything with felt (or even had a little supply of it in my craft room), and I’m excited work with it more in the future. I really enjoyed making these ornaments because they were so easy and mindless to put together, creating a polished result. What does that mean for you? I had a fun time and learned a lot at an herbal-infused chocolate class that was put on by our local apothecary. As well as coming home with some amazing chocolates and a head full of ideas for Christmas, I learned how to make rose hip jam! It was something completely new to me, so it was fun to both learn about it and sample it in some of the chocolates. Now I’m making my own in hopes of recreating that deliciousness ~ more details to come. A chocolate making post is definitely in the works!

I was also busy this week finishing up the photo book that I give to Calder every Christmas. The book is fill with photos taken over the course of the year. They always start with the previous year’s Christmas and end with the current year’s Thanksgiving – that way we don’t miss any holidays and there’s some consistency. This is a little tradition that both of us really look forward to. While it’s hard to fit the time in to make one, it’s so much fun looking back over the year in photos, and Calder loves opening it on Christmas morning and taking a moment to slow down and flip through the pages. At close to 300 pages and over 400 photos, this is our longest one yet, but with a kiddo as cute as A. Max, it was hard to keep my photo number down! We’ve also found that with all photos being digital, this is a great way for us to print out a selection and having them on the bookshelf. I had a pretty relaxing week at home.  Christmas came early when my UPS man delivered a brand new vacuum cleaner to my door on Monday.  Receiving an enormous unexpected package was really exciting! I love mail and I send care packages a lottttt, but it’s rare that I receive one myself.  The new vacuum gave me an intention for my week: clean. everything.  I finished up my cleaning spree by carrying my weight in cardboard and recyclables to the center tonight. I also took a trip to the laundromat where I had eleven washers running simultaneously. I was in and out of there in an hour and a half. It was pretttttty sweet. Yes, I just wrote a whole paragraph about the joys of cleaning one’s home.  I love this vacuum cleaner more than I thought was Sarahly possible.

In between elving Christmas projects, I spent a lot of time in the kitchen this week.  I shared the almost vegan jam muffins yesterday.  I made sloppy joes for the first time in at least a decade and I realized, they are not that good. Just a pile of saucy crumbly meat.  I also channeled my brother Jeff and made a pizza casserole that was delicious and devoured within 24 hours.   I also made some pasta e fagioli soup and lots of cookies! I’ll be sharing some of those recipes with you at some point soon. Right now I’m snacking on a big bowl of couscous that I seasoned with cumin, tarragon, ground cloves, salt and butter.  Happy weekend! I started the week in Florida hanging out with my childhood best friend. We basically had a sleepover for ten days straight, complete with giggling, crafting and lots of catching up. The weather there was amazzzzzing – eighty degrees amazing. So nice and warm that we even went for a couple runs, something I don’t do too often.

I also bought my first pair of grown up running shoes! By grown up, I mean I didn’t pick them based on color. I went to Fit2Run, a great store, where they tested my motion mechanics, my arch height, and where I apply the most pressure when I stand and run.  It was an eye opening experience and I feel like I walked ran away with the most comfortable shoes on the planet, at least for my feet.  Now running is actually comfortable instead of painful. Fingers crossed that it stays that way 🙂 The friend I was staying with is actually running a half marathon tomorrow, so good luck and wishes to her!

Even though I had the best time catching up, it was nice to come home and hug my pets and bf.  On Tuesday we picked out a tree (bigger than last year, yipee!), bought another string of lights and decorated for the holidays.  How do you like winter Frankenstein?  I bought him at Michaels for $4 during Halloween, but I love him too much to pack him away until next year.  He’s going to be like those geese that you put different outfits on for each season.. just wait until you see Easter F-stein!

Like Sarah, I started the week in one location, California, and ended it in another, Colorado… the funny thing is, as a kid whenever I heard the word California, I imagined sunshine and beaches, instead we had snow! And whenever I heard Colorado, of course I imagined the snowy rockies, but we came home to 50 degree days. We had such a great time sledding and playing in the snow with Alex, but I was happy to come home to our “warm” city. I feel like the rest of the week was spent falling back into our routine and chipping away at some of my ambitious Christmas crafting plans. Our house is currently filled with the scent of cloves and oranges, and I decided that it’s never too late to try to put together a simple play teepee for Christmas morning (although my scheme is for something even simpler with less cutting and sewing). Am I crazy? Wish me luck!

Happy December!  If you are in the northern hemisphere these photos will look familiar. Snow, snow and more snow.  If you happen to be in the southern hemisphere, your summer is nearing and these photos might give you a little relief from the heat! Looking at years past, I’d say I’m pretty successful at skipping out on winters.  It was hard for me to round up these snowy pictures because I seem to be hiding out somewhere warm during December.  This year I’m embracing the cold (well, minus last week when I soaked in the eighty degree temperatures that Florida had to offer..) by wearing lots of knit hats and wool socks.  You can find me drinking tea whenever I’m awake and if it is a work from home day I will most certainly be wearing my fuzzy robe over my clothes 🙂 How do you stay warm and cheery during the winter?

I know that Sarah’s been busy all week with a photo shoot, so of course the Friday post is late when left in my hands. And me? I’ve been busy all week with the general busy-ness of life – doctor’s appointments, dog sitting, haircuts, generally rough stuff :). But I was lucky enough to sneak in a few moments of Christmas planning here and there. I tested out a few methods for making some toddler-safe tree ornaments (that’s a work-in-progress shot above). And I was finally able to take that lip balm course at the local apothecary. It was so good! I made lip balm before, but it was nice to get the informed and tested tricks from someone who has a lot more practice. We also learned some simple and natural techniques for adding color to our balms and for making glosses too. I’m so excited to try making a batch for holiday giving!

What a week! I cooked up a storm, which I’ll be sharing this week and I went on a work trip to Charlotte.  Lately I had been feeling uninspired in the kitchen. I realized that was because I wasn’t spending much time in there.  I would make a quick dish, something unsatisfying and then feel bummed about it.  This past week I spent a few hours cooking up new recipes and creating different spice blends and it felt so therapeutic.  I guess I just had to get back on the horse. Yehawwww, get ready for some tasty dishes this week and this winter 🙂 Pictured above are grilled pork skewers with a warm marinade including nutmeg, cayenne, cinnamon, lemon juice and much more.

Thanksgiving is upon us! I usually forget about holidays until the week before and then I get uber excited about them.  Tomorrow I’m headed to Florida for the next ten days to help my best friend plan her wedding.  I’m so excited to chitchat and lounge and have a laid back little holiday with a sweet lady.  I’m thinking about stopping by the Everglades before I drive back home.  I’ve never been, have you?

If you’re following along on our Instagram feed, then you already know that it was cold and snowy in Boulder this week! We pulled the sled out of the garage and took Alex for a stroll around the neighborhood on that first morning – he loved it!!! In the photo above he just got on and fell backwards, but he soon figured out how to hold himself up as the sled jerked to a start. It was just as exciting for us to see his joy. Every time we mentioned the sled, he would run for the door. So that’s been our main mode of transport – I pulled him over to his friend’s for a play date, our babysitter took him on a few walks (after teaching him the fine art of snow angels), and last night on the sled, he figured out that waving to the snowplows would get them to honk their horns. Important stuff going on around here!

Meanwhile, inside the house I kept a pot of soup on the stove every day. I think because this blast came earlier in the season than we would have expected, it seamed extra magical having the steamed up windows, fire in the fireplace, candles going on the mantel and the blanket of snow outside. I feel like the week was a slow dream, and other than the fridge of leftovers and “first snow” pictures, I don’t have anything else to show for it, but that’s not a bad thing either. If the snow’s coming your way, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

This week was busy, busy over here! Lots of shoots, editing and meetings, but I did find time to rake the yard and go for a few hikes with the pup.  I also went shopping for clothes, which is a big deal for me. Those pants in the pic are newbies. Like ’em?  I rarely buy threads.  I just hate spending money on clothes, which is hard because I’m always envious of other people’s style, yet I’m not willing to spend money on shirts. First world problems, I know.

I also went on a date this week, whoop whoop! We went to see Interstellar, which is now one of my most favorite movies. I loved it so much. I’ve been thinking about it ALL WEEK and I even had a dream about it.  So, that’s kind of a big deal.  It’s rare that I go that bananas over a movie, but it was just so dreamy and intriguing.  Christopher Nolan is really securing his spot as my favorite director (I’m sure that is his most prestigious award yet..). This movie was just as mind boggling as Inception so if you enjoyed that, you’ll enjoy this. He also made Memento, The Prestige and The Dark Knight Trilogy and other greats.

I totally felt like this week was recover from Halloween week. As you know, our costumes weren’t even that involved, but not having them done was weighing on me all last week. So, when Monday evening came, it was nice to sit down and work on a project without that Halloween guilt. I started a hat for Calder. It’s a bit of an experiment using the yarn and thread in the photo above… I realized that I’m going to need about twenty more skeins of thread to finish this puppy (in fact, I took the photo so that I wouldn’t forget the numbers for the colors I’m using). If it’s a successful venture, I’ll be sure to share the finished hat here!

My other bit of fun this week was going for our 20 week ultrasound. That means we’re about halfway through this pregnancy. It was so much fun to see the little guy and know everything was developing as it should, but it also makes me so impatient for a few days afterwards – I can’t wait to meet him for real! (and you don’t know how much willpower it took to not use an exclamation point after every sentence in this paragraph)

Just like Kate, I felt like this week was recover from Halloween week. Chapel Hill is the place to be on Halloween!  There were over 40,000 costumed lads and ladies roaming around Franklin street until all hours of the morning and I was one of them.  I was huuuungover on Saturday, which prompted me to create The Morning After blog.  If you ever have one heck of a night and you’re feelin’ it the next morning, submit your Morning After photos here.

After the great work distraction that is Halloween passed, I got down to business and edited hundreds of photos this week.  Sitting in front of my computer hour after hour got old pretty fast. I started daydreaming about alternate careers and future travels and I decided I really want to complete my yoga teacher training abroad.  For the past few years, I’ve toyed with the idea of getting my RYT200 certification and I think 2o15 is the right time. I’ve been looking into this program in Nepal, but of course I have a lot of research to do about teachers, ashrams and programs.  I’d love to return to Nepal (pictured above), but I’m also open to traveling to whichever country hosts what I think to be the best fit for me. Let me know if you or someone you know has been certified abroad. I’d love to chat about the experience.

Weren’t Sarah’s photo tips from yesterday great? I’m still trying to figure out how to put them into practice with a running toddler. I place him in that nice big shady spot and he runs towards the sun! So over the past week I’ve taken plenty of blurry shots with speckles of bright sun and shade covering the little guy’s face. Hopefully we’ll get a few great pictures tomorrow and Saturday while he’s wearing his yet-to-be-completed Halloween costumes. I know, I had all week!

And I hate to admit this, but I may have been procrastinating with the costumes because I spent way too much time this week thinking about (and scanning Pinterest for) Christmas and decorations. I’m excited to add some toddler-friendly decorations to the mix, and I’m starting to realize that the sooner I can work on them the better. Sounds like Kate and I have had similarly productive weeks.  I made numerous trips to the craft store this week and last night I spent three hours playing around with fondant.  I made Super Mario inspired characters to adorn cupcakes for my man’s birthday this coming Saturday.  He is turning 25, but he’s really 9 at heart.

I’ve also made very little progress on my Cleopatra Halloween costume. I was making progress in the beginning of October..  I ordered a wig two weeks ago and it still hasn’t come in.  I’ve been holding off buying one just hoping that I’d wake up and it would be on my doorstep, but as of 1:10 a.m. on October 31st, I’m officially giving up hope.  I plan on going to a beauty supply store tomorrow and picking one up.  I still need to add beads and adornments to the wig; I’m inspired by this image of Elizabeth Taylor.   So far, I have gathered an old gold prom dress that I’ll be wearing along with lots of chunky gold jewelry and these amazing metallic temporary tattoos!  I’m tempted to find a curved staff stick in the woods and spray paint it gold tomorrow, but we’ll see, maybe this empress doesn’t need a staff.

This week I had two firsts!  Last night I went to the North Carolina State Fair and the night before I successfully canned a batch of caramelized onions. Simple pleasures, right?  The canning was actually easier than I expected.  I helped with a few canning projects in the past, but this was the first time doing it all by myself, with no instruction and in my own ill-prepared kitchen.  Cutting nine pounds of yellow onions by hand was a bit of a challenge tear fest.  Besides a food processor, my kitchen is also lacking large pots.  This made the whole process a little more time consuming, but nonetheless I ended up with ten half pints of delicious caramelized onions!  If you have a seasonal recipe I should try, please let me know 🙂

The NC State Fair was an equally awesome first.  I’m a big fan of fairs and festivals and this one didn’t disappoint.  It was much bigger than past fairs I’ve frequented, which meant more livestock, crafts, food and games.  I love winding my way through the exhibit halls and seeing the largest pumpkin or most prettiest cross-stitch.  I was a little disappointed in my appetite though.  I only had room for one order of mozzarella sticks! I replaced my time allotted for eating towards playing games.  I couldn’t find the bingo tent (it wasn’t listed on the map-can you believe that?!), but I did throw a few darts and toss a couple ping pong balls.  K even won three gold fish!  We named them Peppy, Grumpy & Stooge.

Late for the second week in a row, I know! For me this week seems to have been all about food and moments of startitis.

On the food front, I can’t help but talk about our CSA yet again, because it’s so amazing how getting a box of vegetables delivered to you each week influences your eating, cooking, and recipe searches (and I know we’ve had a CSA before, but when you take a break and then start again, it’s BAM! vegetables in your face, fridge, and dreams). I could spend my whole day looking up new recipes and experimenting, but I don’t have that time at the moment, so I squeeze it in between moments of work and trips to the playground. This weekend I have plans to make a salsa verde with tomatillos that arrived last night and a cabbage-filled savory hand pie with a recipe from the original Moosewood Cookbook. The photo above is from my night of experimenting with new toppings for my favorite roasted veggie soup – more on that soon!

On my terrible case of startitis, this week has been a particularly slow work week, which is fantastic, but I realized that I should be taking advantage of the lull and working on every idea I’ve ever had. Which leads to finishing almost nothing! I started a new sweater for Alex, picked out a pattern for a sweater for me, dug into my fabric stash for a new halloween decoration idea (will share the details next week if it works), cheesecloth is sitting in the middle of the floor because I wanted to make ghosts for the front porch, and that’s next to a pile of yarn tagged for new winter hats for Calder and me. Let’s hope I accomplish one or two of those projects before my motivation wanes!
