Card Games for the Entire Family!

I feel so lucky that my kids are willing (and even excited!) to play games with us. We love all sorts of games, but lately we’ve been playing a lot of card games, and here are a few of our favorites.

This selection can be played by anyone in our family (ages 7 to 70!). Some are faster to learn than others, and some have a shorter play time than others. They all involve a bit of strategy, but we’ve found that the playing field is pretty even between us. Yes, it’s humbling to be beat by our 7 year old.

  • Sushi Go : this is our newest game and it became an instant hit! What is this game like? Just imagine that you’re sitting in the sushi restaurant and being served by a conveyer belt. You want to pick your best sushi combos before they’re snagged by someone else.
  • Rat-a-Tat Cat : this may be one of the simplest games to learn. Your goal is to get the lowest card total before everyone else, but the trick is that you can only look at your cards in certain circumstances. Work on your memory and hope that your opponent doesn’t steal your zeros!
  • Set : Ok, this might be one of the hardest to learn… especially if you’re our mom! You’re trying to make sets that match OR don’t match, but keeping track of the variety of shapes, patterns, colors, and numbers can throw you for a loop!
  • UNO : everyone knows UNO, and you don’t realize how much strategy is involved until you’re getting your ass kicked by my kids.
  • Killer Bunnies : OK, if Set is the hardest to learn, this one could be a close second. It’s definitely the longest to play, so pour yourself a cocktail and settle in. This is the one card game on the list that has make grown people cry. It’s fun if you’re on top and devastating when your bunnies die. But how do you win? Ok, there’s a touch of chance there. If you buy the base set and like it, there are many supplemental decks to up the fun!
  • Ramen Fury : A year ago we didn’t own any food-themed games, so I’m as surprised as you that there are two on the list! Work to make a delicious bowl of ramen, but watch out for your opponents who may steal in ingredients or toss spicy sauce your way!

We’re always looking for more games. Do you have a favorite to add to our list?!
