Bali! Before heading to Bali, I groaned at the thought of it.  I had only ever heard Bali mentioned during prize puzzles on Wheel Of Fortune and it was always preceded by ‘an all inclusive 9-day getaway!’ blah, blah, blah. I imagined it to look like one huge Sandals resort. Ick. Not my kind of traveling (I apologize if it’s yours!) I thought, no way, not going to Bali, any other Indonesian island, yes, Bali, nope! Holy crap I was wrong. Bali is amazing.  There are a couple touristy beaches on the southern side of the island, but beyond that Bali is an amazing, lush, green gem of an island.  More on that in another post, but for now here’s a few new Seasoned Views for your April desktops and backgrounds. Usually we share images that Kate and I took over the past week, but we’re taking it wayyyy back this month and sharing photos of where I was exactly four years ago. I feel like I’m rubbing it in Katie’s Colorado face every time I say it, but SPRING IS HERE! For the past few weeks I’ve been lounging in the hammock reading, walking on the slackline, and taking this hound dog on hikes. Sometimes it’s sunny and sometimes it pours the entire time – like the hike shown below – but all warm weather is awesome weather in my book! We have a forecast full of rain for today, but I’ll take it 🙂 Oh and I shared a few words about the invasive Chinese Wisteria (that amazing purple blooming bush) on our Live Seasoned facebook page today.

Side note: see all that flippin’ pollen in the water?! I think everyone in the state is suffering from sinus congestion. I plan on staying in for the most part to start my taxes and sift through some photo editing work. Have a lovely weekend!

Why I Fell in Love with Laos After Only Five Days

If you are curious about exactly where I went in Laos and how it all went down, here’s a detailed (might I say too detailed) account of my trip in 2012.

Laos! A country most people have never heard of or at least could not place on a map. The same was true for me before I lived and worked in Thailand. Once I found myself in southeast Asia, I became aquatinted with small countries that surrounded me as I hoped to explore each of them. Laos had always intrigued me because I heard so very little about it.  I must admit, I did very little research before heading to Laos, which is how I go about most trips (for better or worse), but nothing I read hinted at exactly how beautiful, calm, sleepy, and kind Laos can be to travelers.

Cold Brew Coffee

live seasoned spring 16 cold brew coffee-1 copy The necessity of coffee is fitting for a Monday post, yeah? Brewing your coffee at home is one of the easiest ways to save money each week. I’m so used to it that buying a cup of coffee is a luxury to me and one I really enjoy, which wouldn’t be the case if I was waiting in line day after day at the coffee shop. During the winter, I usually brew a small pot in a french press or opt for the single cup pour over method, but once March rolls around it’s cold brewed coffee all. the. way. Once I discovered this method there was no turning back.

Why cold brew coffee?

  • Extremely easy to make. The directions are straight forward and there’s no fancy equipment necessary.
  • It saves time. It’s brewed in a larger concentrated batch, so you make it once for the week, not every morning.
  • It tastes better. The acidity of cold brew coffee is lower because the grounds are never subjected to boiling water, which makes the chemical profile quite different than that of a conventionally brewed pot of coffee. Lower acidity makes for a smoother taste and naturally sweeter taste and in turn is less harsh on your tummy.
  • It’s never watery. Besides the acidity issues that arise with hot coffee and rapidly cooling hot coffee with ice cubes (iced coffee), you’ll never drink a watery cup of iced coffee again. Watery diluted coffee is awful. Less caffeine and less taste – who want’s that?
  • More caffeine per cup. Cold brew coffee has a higher bean to water ratio and a longer brew time, which means it contains more caffeine. I think of cold brew coffee as a concentrate and I often add water, but more on that below.

Hey, hey! I had the most fun work week as you can see.  We’re putting together a new hospitality and tabletop catalog at Haand, the ceramics company that I shoot for. I arrived at work on Thursday to this beautiful sight, all our matte white pieces snuggled together on one table with some spring blooms for an added bonus.  As the perfect follow up to shooting dozens of pieces, I drove over to Raleigh today to visit Provenance restaurant to see how our plates stand up in a fast-paced kitchen. It makes my heart happy to actually see chefs creating mini masterpieces on our dishes. Documenting artists and makers will always be a favorite subject of mine. Tonight I’ll head to the darkroom for some printing and this weekend I think I’ll edit, edit, edit the days away. What about you? Did spring visit you yet? I enjoyed temps in the eighties this week! Holy heck do I get hangry.  If the man and I are ever having an argument he usually pauses the fight to get me a snack. Seriously. It usually works too. Being hungry can hijack your brain and cause you to do and say crazy stuff. It’s all about survival though so before we blame our monkey brains, let’s just make a snack instead.  Here are my favorite quick and easy snacks.

Sarah’s Jambalaya

Guys! I almost dropped the ball on posting today, it’s so nice outside and I have a couple of gigs to run off to, but then these jambalaya pics appeared out of nowhere.  This recipe was begging to be shared and for good reason. This jambalaya is a fan favorite and it’s a one pot meal.  How can a home cooked dinner be any easier? How To: Find Flattering Natural Light for Portraits

Sarah is a professional photographer, from time to time she shares general photography tips and specialized tutorials to teach you to take better images.

Did you ever see the Seinfeld episode where Jerry’s girlfriend looks extremely different depending on the lighting? If you haven’t, click the link and get caught up! If you’re a photographer, amateur or professional, you know that lighting is everything in photography, especially when it comes to photographing people and objects.

For the purpose of this post, let’s define flattering natural light as soft, even lighting without hard shadows. Let’s also aim for photos that reflect the true color of the subjects being photographed. We’ll also pretend that these photos are going to be self portraits because everyone is taking selfies these days and really the best way to master a technique is to practice, practice, practice.  You can be sure that you’ll always have yourself and your cell in most situations, so practice looking for flattering light every day that way when you need to find it, you’ll know where to look.

Two Bits

I’ve been feeling way under the weather this week so I’m treating this weekend like the past few days, lots of baths (and bath bombs!), my favorite chicken soup, some good books and a healthy dose of relaxing. I can’t help but wonder if all the traveling and working (4 shoots in 5 days) over the past week is what knocked me off my feet, what a softie, right? Thankfully next week will be an editing marathon so I’ll be staying at home instead of out meeting clients. The flexibility of my job has me feeling seriously blue for those of you who are not able to take adequate time off for illness and other mental and physical problems that come your way. Remember to take it easy if you’re not feeling a hundred percent. Life can wait, it really can. Take care of yourself! XO

 

Jamaica – Seasoned View: Vol. 23

IT’S MARCH! WTF. If you remember, that’s exactly how I started the February Seasoned View.  I can’t help but feel like this year is slipping through my fingers. I think I’m bopping around so much that I haven’t had a chance to sit still and organize my thoughts, but hey, who needs a moment of calm?  This week I’m hosting Blacka, who I refer to as my Jamaican dad, but he’s more like a best friend.

Blacka lives next door to the villa where I studied abroad in Jamaica in 2009.  I loved talking with him and his family so much that I decided to go back to Jamaica alone in 2010 and stay with them for two months.  Those were some of the most relaxing months of my life.  I would wake up early because of the heat at which point I’d go lay near the beach, catch a breeze, and take another nap. After nap time, I’d hit the street (as they say in Jamaica) take tons of photos, eat jerk fish, drink Red Stripe and stroll on back home. I learned how to make rice and peas, I made an “office” on the porch of an unused villa, and I learned how to wash my clothes by hand.  I met up with farmers and locals that I had met the year before and generally treated every day as a mini photo adventure. I shot soccer tournaments, elementary school fashion shows, and dozens of different professions.  I waded out into five feet of water in the ocean (with my camera held over my head) in order to hop aboard a tiny fishing boat, slipped on my ass all the way down a muddy mountain to teacher ginger farmers about pesticides, and slept in half finished houses with acquaintances just to get a better feel for the life of a Jamaican.  I even worked on a book concept, but like most of my projects, it was never actually completed. Over the course of two summers, I fell in love with Caribbean culture and island life. I made countless friends, a handful of which I still keep in touch with. I cannot believe that I’m hosting Blacka in my home.  I always hoped the day would come, but I never knew it could be a reality. It just goes to show you the potential of talking to strangers. I thought it could be fun to share some Jam Rock photos here today in honor of the one trip that made me realize I could feel completely at home anywhere on earth.  What a magical moment that was.

The drive up was terrifying, but totally worth the private tour.live seasoned seasoned view march jamaica13 This is little Lily, she is the daughter of the cook for the study abroad program.  I was able to stay at their home that they’re building brick by brick, which is how homes are built in most third world countries.live seasoned seasoned view march jamaica14Jamaica’s beer of choice.  My best friend actually worked in the offices of the Red Stripe factory so I was able to go on a tour, watch their company soccer team play and even try Red Stripe Bold, an awesome spin off brew that isn’t exported.
