Welcome March

On the first Wednesday of each month, we like to pause and take a look at what’s going on in the world around us.  We’ll highlight some nature and environmental news, give you a bit of inspiration, and ask you to partake in a monthly sustainability initiative with us.

That old “in like a lion” proverb is really ringing true this year! It looks like most of the country was hit by that big winter storm and an arctic blast last weekend… so, what did we do in our house? Stayed inside and ate LAMB!

Please tell me you get how funny that is. In like a LION out like LAMB. {Sarah here: Dude, we get it. Alternately, ‘Mom! You’re embarrassing me!’}

I don’t know about you, but I’d be more than happy to say goodbye to these arctic blasts and welcome the warmer days of spring. Luckily, sunnier days are ahead! For one, we set the clocks ahead this weekend. An extra hour of free sunshine? I’ll buy into that mental game of springing ahead.

Their Days:

In the animal world, there are a few other signs of spring. Out west the sandhill cranes are on the move north. They pass right through Colorado, and there are even a few nesting areas within the state. One year I’d like to take a trip to see the large flocks as they head north. The hummingbird maps are showing their 2019 return to the continental US.

The Days:

With all of this talk of spring, I still have to remind myself that March is the snowiest month along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. November is the second snowiest, and then APRIL is the third snowiest. So while many areas of the country are getting ready for spring blossoms, I’m doing my best to plan for a few more snow days, and reminding myself to appreciate this precipitation whenever we get it.

Our Days:

Since the start of the year, we’ve been focusing on monthly initiatives. A theme that sets the stage for some of the posts we’ll be sharing throughout the month. In January, we focused on good habits. During February we kept those good habits going with a particular focus on taking care of our mental health. This month, we’d like to put the focus on relationships, and in particular to something Sarah’s coined “friendraising”. We are thinking about ways that we can build community around shared interests, and we’re excited to write posts about a few of the projects that we have going on and to highlight the work of others.

Earth Days:

There are a handful of great environmental holidays to celebrate this month!  I plan on participating in each one, and I already have events scheduled with my Meetup group!  I am so thankful for water and woods that I feel like every day is an international river, forest and water day, but this year those dates are going to be extra special and shared with so many awesome peeps!
