Waste Less Wednesday: Shampoo & Soap Bars

This year we’ve been doing a series called Waste Less Wednesday focused on little and big ways that we can reduce our consumption. And if you’d like more hair-related posts, here’s our recipe for dry shampoo and here’s my DIY dandruff shampoo that worked like a charm!

This might not seem like the most technical of posts. And we’re suggesting you buy something, so even the “waste less” principle sounds questionable at first, BUT by adopting soap and shampoo bars, you’re getting the suds but skipping the plastic bottles, and that’s a win in our books!

We’ve all used bars of soap before, and in many ways, using a shampoo bar is exactly the same. You rub it on your hair, and the moment you start to lather, you feel the suds develop. Then you rinse and move on to the conditioner. As with all things, I like to thoroughly test something before recommending it to friends and strangers. I started using a shampoo bar last winter, and it’s been a major win in my books!

I started with Trader Joe’s shampoo bar (much cheaper if bought in the store). At $4 a bar, it’s a great starter option. That bar lasted me for about 9 months (no joke!). That definitely says something about my showering habits, but I think that it also says something about our use of liquid soaps & shampoos. We often use more than we need. Just a small dollop of shampoo (or body wash) is enough to get us clean, but I know that I’m not that careful when squeezing the bottle. With bars, your application is much easier to control.

The TJ shampoo bar worked so well that I’m now testing out both the HiBar shampoo and conditioner. So far so good! And as for my soap usage, I’m a big fan of the good bars. I keep all of my bars on bamboo soap dishes and out of the shower spray. We have a high shower shelf that’s perfect for this situation. Both of those factors all the bars to dry out between usage and help them to last for a long time.

In addition to the favorites that I mentioned, I found a few more fun options that would make great stocking stuffers!

Now…. let’s go clean up our act. 😉
