Read with Me: Overstory

If you have some young tree-lovers in the house, check out our tree-themed recommendations for kids.

Among all of the nature-focused books I’ve been reading, I finally indulged in one that’s a work of fiction.

The Overstory is the story of strangers that are brought together because they share a love of trees.  The first section of the book introduces a character and their corresponding tree species with each new chapter. As time goes on, characters meet, have shared experiences and passions, part ways, and sometimes meet again. Their love of trees leads to some drastic life choices and unexpected endings.

Throughout the book, I found myself caring for the characters, but aching for the trees. As I mentioned in this post, we’ve been learning a lot about trees. The more we learn, the more we’ve been feeling a deep love and admiration for the trees.

The book is a work of fiction, but it’s one that’s firmly planted in the trials and tribulations of modern day growth, development, and environmental degradation. It’s a book that will make you want to hug a tree. Climb one. And whisper a word of thanks when in their presence.
