It’s blood orange season! Pick some up at the market and treat your V-day pals to this delicious pink cocktail.

What’s a blood orange?

Good question! These oranges have anthocyanins, which are the pigments more commonly found in blueberries and raspberries. Along with their unique coloring, these oranges also have hints of raspberry flavor along with the traditional citrus notes.

It’s believed that blood oranges developed due to a naturally occurring genetic mutation, and they are native to the Mediterranean region. The maroon or crimson color only develops when the growing fruit experiences low overnight temperatures. This temperature fluctuation happens during fall and winter seasons when grown, thus creating the limited seasonal availability of the fruit.

Mixing these up is super simple, but getting that first shake right is essential. This post explains why I like to use the blender and what’s up with the double-shake method.

With our previous egg white cocktails, we’ve called for simple syrup. I really like the use of simple syrups, especially when they’re infused with an additional flavor. In this case, I wanted to keep the cocktail simple and didn’t have the need for an additional flavor, so I’ve experimented with using maple syrup. I find that it works really well and is something that we always have on hand.

  • 2 oz gin
  • 1 oz maple syrup
  • 2 oz fresh blood orange juice
  • ginger beear
  • egg white
  • dash of wildflower bitters (optional)
  • ice
  • Place the gin, maple syrup, orange juice, and egg white in a blender. Blend on high for just a few seconds. Everything should be thoroughly mixed and foamy.
  • Transfer the mixture to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake again to chill the drink.
  • Pour over ice in a cocktail glass, top off with ginger beer and a dash of bitters.
