As our final farewell to the east coast, little A and I are spending June at our family’s house in Saxis, VA. Today we’re skipping our regularly scheduled In Season post and sharing some photos from the island (more on that next week).
Saxis is 350 years old. It’s a small community full of history, and we are so happy for the chance to spend some quality time here. There is one main street that winds through the town, and all of the smaller lanes are often just someone’s driveway! The main street used to be lined with businesses, but now there are just a few ~ a museum and ice cream stand are among them, but no grocer!. This is a place where everyone knows everyone (and their business), but being the new kids in town, we get a tickle out of hearing bits and pieces of the gossip and meeting the cast of characters. Every day Alex and I head out for morning and evening bike rides. We easily ride from one end of town to the other, stopping along “glass beach” to look for treasures and to cool off in the water before checking in with the osprey nest. Today’s photos are snapshots of what we see on those rides.
We hope you have a great weekend! Any fun plans? We’re waiting for the rest of the family to join us in the sun and sand.
We’re currently looking for a home in Saxis. Where is this glass beach you speak of? We live in northeastern pa now, and find beach glass all around our local creeks. We look forward to moving south and finding new places to discover. 🙂
Woohoo for you! The glass beach is on Matthews Road, you basically take a right before you see the sign welcoming you to Saxis. Saxis is pretty tiny so everything is nearby 🙂 You’ll see people combing for sea glass daily. Last year we ran into a man who had found an arrowhead a few moments before we arrived!
Yay! Thank you so much! Happy discovering 🙂
We recently retired to the Virginia Eastern Shore and yesterday we decided to explore. I had heard the name Saxis Beach mentioned by locals and that was our first destination. The beautiful country roads we took off of Rte 13 (our safe base till we are better familiar) made us feel wonder watchingl woods turning to farm fields to woods to that awesome sight of marshlands signaling big waters ahead. We were enchanted by the town and have decided that big old pier would be our next place to try to catch some fish and crab. You describe the town the way I was imagining it to be. I love to look at houses and imagine the lives being lived in them. I wish you and your lovely family much love, peace and happiness. Yes, I am an old hippie at heart.
