A couple of weeks ago during a string of snow days, we came up with the sweetest afternoon routine, and it centered around something we’re calling “Quiet as a Mouse Tea Time”.
The concept is simple and specific:
- everyone is served a cup or pot of tea (mint and Sleepytime are great herbal options for kids)
- playing with toys is NOT allowed
- BUT doing something mindful and creative is encouraged
- most importantly, during tea time everyone has to be as a QUIET as a MOUSE!
A few examples of encouraged tea time activities are reading books, drawing or painting, knitting, or sewing. These standards apply to both kids and adults.
We don’t do this every day, but it’s a great addition to the afternoons when we’re spending a lot of time at home. Whip-horn the Rhino and his beautiful scarf were both worked on over a number of these afternoon tea times.
While I’m making the tea, the boys prepare for their activity. Once tea is served, I set a timer for 20 minutes and quiet time begins! Sometimes the boys are so excited to share their work that tea time ends after that first 20 minutes. On other days they’re so engrossed in their projects that they request a time extension. It’s as cute as it sounds. <3
Beyond just brewing a pot of tea, there are a few ways to make the moment even more special. In our house, each kiddo gets their own personal pot of tea. These are a cute option and come in a number of different colors. They also use a smaller 4 oz mug, which is the perfect size for getting to drink a few cups of tea from their own pot. What kid doesn’t love getting to pour their own refills?
For two kids that are constantly on the move, Quiet as a Mouse Tea Time has become the perfect way to encourage a bit of quiet and creative activity. And the mental recharge is great for all of us.
This is a great idea. We would do this in class and it worked great, especially in the classrooms where the teacher also participated.
