Hey there. Get rid of those gift bags because we’re coming at you today with a quick little knitting project that’s the perfect topper for that bottle of wine or liquor you’re giving this Christmas (we have a few suggestions below).
Materials
I used worsted weight yarn and either US 7 or 6 needles. I can’t remember which size needle, but it’s super easy to do a test knit and see which size works better for you. AND luckily you’re making mini hats and scarves to fit wine bottles. There’s no pressure to get the perfect fit. If you’re already feeling overwhelmed, pour yourself a drink.
Wine Scarf Patterns
I made two different scarves. Single colored scarves using icord and the striped ones knit length-wise.
- plain scarf: cast on 7 stitches and knit in icord for about 13.5 inches. At that point test the scarf by tying it around the neck of a wine bottle and see how you like it. You can always add more length. Cast off and add a touch of fringe to both ends.
- striped scarf: cast on 70 stitches, knit alternating rows of colors and cast off on the 7th row (that’ll give you three white rows surrounded by four red rows). Leave a bit of extra yarn on each end to create the fringe.
Wine Hat Patterns
Just as with the scarves, I used two different patterns for the hats. A “winter cap” with a more rounded top and a Santa hat with a more pointed top.
- Santa cap: With complimentary color, cast on 20 stitches, k2p2 for 14 rows. Switch to main color and knit for 14 rounds. Round 15: *K3, k2tog* four times. Knit four rounds. Round 20: *K2, k2tog* four times. Knit two rounds. Round 23: *K1, k2tog* four times. Knit 1 round. Round 25: *k2tog* four times. Bind off and weave in the yarn ends. Add a bit of fringe to the top.
- winter cap: With complimentary color, cast on 20 stitches, k2p2 for 14 rows. Switch to main color and knit for 17 rounds. Round 18: *k2tog* all the way around. Knit one round. Round 20: *k2tog* all the way around. Bind off and weave in the yarn ends. Add a bit of fringe to the top.
Add these to a few bottles and you have yourself a gift with a bit of personality!
If you want to DIY the liquors, here are some of our favorites:
- Candy Cane Vodka (super simple and requires almost no prep!)
- DIY Coffee Liqueur (ready in less than five days!)
- Vanilla Vodka (you need just one week for a good vanilla vodka infusion)
If you don’t have the time to make any of those, just buy a bottle of Spring 44 Vodka. It has a snowflake on the label, what could be more festive?!
