Make with Me : Edward’s Menagerie

Meet Whip Horn, Luc’s newest little buddy.

The pattern for Whip Horn comes from Edward’s Menagerie. I’ve had my eye on that book for a while and was so excited to dig in when it was gifted to me this past Christmas.

Luc picked out the rhino and requested that it be made with pink yarn. It was so much fun to watch his excitement grow with each stitch of the project.

I’m not as comfortable with my crocheting skills as I am with my knitting. But it seems that if you want to make the really cute Amiguri characters, then you have to learn a few crochet stitches. I’ve tried my hand at crocheting animals a few times in the past. A cat from the Long-Legged Friends book was my first attempt. And I have a couple of half-done butterflies from Lalylala’s Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies sitting in my office. Those attempts definitely failed because the crocheting felt too difficult.

Luc’s excitement definitely motivated me during this project, BUT there was something about the simplicity of the pattern and the well-written and illustrated instructions that helped to keep things moving. I also think my choice to use bulky yarn made it easier to count my stitches and made the actual stitching less difficult than when using skinnier yarn and a smaller hook.

As soon as the rhino was finished and named, Luc got right to work making him a scarf. I know, as if this post couldn’t get any sweeter. He made the scarf using a small spool loom and some very fancy and beautiful Malabrigo Mecha in Piedras. If you want to read more about using knitting looms with kids, we discuss it in this post.

And that, my friends is the story of Whip Horn and his multi-colored scarf.
