This post may not seem revolutionary, but believe me when I say it changed my life. I am not a breakfast person. I don’t necessarily love breakfast foods, but more than that, I just don’t like eating in the morning. My first meal is usually lunch, sometimes even dinner and as far as I can remember, I’ve always been this way. Now that I mix my own cereal, I’m inspired by breakfast again.
Over the past few years, I’ve been trying to pay attention to my nutrition. I always joke that I’m on the single dad diet, basically whatever I can grab and throw together with what’s on hand. I simply don’t have an appetite and no one to cook for, so what’s the point? The point is, good nutrition allows your body and brain to function properly, so I’m giving it a go.
Mixing your own cereal has a few benefits. It’s cheaper. The ‘box’ lasts longer. It’s healthier and one can easily add nutrition through various vitamins and minerals. You feel like a wizard and you get to add all the good stuff in the right proportions. Here’s how it’s done.
Mix Your Own Cereal – The Suggested Fixin’s:
- Cereal – I love this cereal, especially the Flax Plus Multibran Flakes.
- [good] Milk
- Dried Fruit – My favorite choice is Raisins. Craisins are a good option.
- Granola – I like KIND, but this is kind of a big choice. (The granola will likely be the least healthy ingredient because of all the added sugar.)
- Nuts – add protein. Sliced almonds integrate well with the mix.
- Fresh fruit – I love a sweet berry like Raspberries. Bananas are a solid choice too.
- Chia seeds – An easy additive to amp up the antioxidants.
- Hemp seeds – An easy dose of good fats and protein.
- Coconut – A tasty topping, but make sure the coconut flakes don’t have any sugar added.
That’s that. Any ingenious cereal ingredients to add to the mix? Let us know!
