What a beautiful week we’ve had! And I know it’s just a snippet of what’s to come. This week we spent every morning out on the deck before Calder would leave for work. We would drink our coffee and the conversation would always turn towards future projects and ideas. We talked about everything from the mundane, like cleaning the pond, to the more exciting, like what fruits and vegetables we want to try growing at home this summer. And then there are the more long-range plans, like what sorts of hidden nooks we want to develop in our wild mountainside (secret hammocks and benches for relaxing, rope and tire swings for playing, etc.). There’s nothing like a few warm days to make you think you can conquer the world.

Today our plans turned towards the weekend. I’ve been looking forward to this one for about a month now. Tomorrow I’m taking a class on how to make my own makeup using natural ingredients. I’m so excited! I don’t even wear makeup regularly, but it’s going to be fun, and I’m sure I’ll share some of what I learn on the blog!

Happy weekend*

_DSC4753It’s Friiiiday! We’re all looking forward to the weekend so just remember that on your commute home today – try not to angry honk at anyone even if they have bird brains 😉

I’ve been feeling way under the weather this week so I’m treating this weekend like the past few days, lots of baths (and bath bombs!), my favorite chicken soup, some good books and a healthy dose of relaxing. I can’t help but wonder if all the traveling and working (4 shoots in 5 days) over the past week is what knocked me off my feet, what a softie, right? Thankfully next week will be an editing marathon so I’ll be staying at home instead of out meeting clients. The flexibility of my job has me feeling seriously blue for those of you who are not able to take adequate time off for illness and other mental and physical problems that come your way. Remember to take it easy if you’re not feeling a hundred percent. Life can wait, it really can. Take care of yourself! XO

Friiiiiday! This week was pretty ho-hum, but today totally made up for it. I spent the afternoon photographing oyster platters and a staff lunch at Haand, the ceramics company I work for. The vibe at Haand always breathes new life into my soul. There’s no shortage of inspiring conversations about work and life in the studio. It’s never surface chitchat either, it’s always meaningful and usually motivational in terms of producing creative work and moving towards your passions in some form or another. Each time I pull out of the dirt driveway that leads to the studio, I’m feeling immensely grateful for the opportunity to cross paths with so many creative makers on a weekly basis.

I also had a chance to catch up with Haand’s artist in residency, Ian Henderson. After talking to Ian for a few minutes, I realized we followed a similar path of wandering through the arts. Ian is only at Haand for a week, but the studio time has allowed him to play around with a particular type of mold making that he’s been interested in for years.  Ian works full time at Penland’s metal workshop and in the evenings and on weekends he is grinding away in his basement working with cement. He creates massive tile installations that are quite breathtaking. The more I talk to folks like Chris Pence, Mark Warren and Ian Henderson, the more I want to surround myself with other artists and creative types. Are you surrounding yourself with a tribe you admire? I hope so 🙂

I’m giving myself a major high five for checking in this Friday, because as far as my mind is concerned, it’s only Wednesday. Our little family took off for the mountains on Monday and Tuesday. The days were beautifully blue, perfect for skiing, and the afternoons were perfectly cool, perfect for swimming in the local hot springs! These photos are from our visit to Strawberry Park Hot Springs. If you’re ever in the Steamboat Springs area, this little oasis is worth the visit… and if you’re anything like us, you’ll drive away scheming up plans to create your own artificial hot spring in your backyard (I think they call that a hot tub?).

ps. It’s been a while since we’ve used a timer to take a family portrait. I think we have to work on our composition and explaining things to the boys… Alex was so confused!

Happy Friday! Yesterday I was hit with a wave of sinus pressure that knocked me off my feet – literally – I just sat on my yoga mat for a few hours.  I stretched, pondered, meditated, and just generally sat in a hazy fog of sinus annoyance.  Today I’m going to try to work through it by writing about the Annapurna Circuit Trek.  I was reminded of another beautiful, high-altitude adventure yesterday when my pop asked me for this image from Phu Chi Fah, Thailand:

Live Seasoned Phu Chi Fah, Thailand 12-11-103Phu Chi Fah is a tiny village perched on the northeastern side of the Phi Pan Nam Range, a mountain chain that borders northern Thailand and Laos.  There’s an amazing set of cliffs that one can hike up in the dark in order to watch the sunrise.  It’s a spectacular sight as the clouds roll in looking like water.Live Seasoned Phu Chi Fah, Thailand 12-11-100 I’ve never been so cold as the hour I sat waiting on a windy cliff for the sun to come up.Live Seasoned Phu Chi Fah, Thailand 12-11-101 Live Seasoned Phu Chi Fah, Thailand 12-11-102 When it finally rose and turned the landscape into a warm orangey scene, I felt like the entire morning had been a dream.Live Seasoned Phu Chi Fah, Thailand 12-11-104 I was most intrigued by the weekend trading market that sprang up on the side of the mountain that Sunday morning.  Driving through, I was glued to the bus window, vowing to return and explore the mountain market someday.  That was five years ago, but I still think about it often.Live Seasoned Phu Chi Fah, Thailand 12-11-105 Then there was this amazing vegetarian restaurant that Saleem and I visited at least four times that weekend.  The food in northern Thailand is unlike the rest of the country’s cuisine. So spicy and delicious.Live Seasoned Phu Chi Fah, Thailand 12-11-106 After lunch, we wandered into a shop that had at least a hundred different kinds of shoelaces.  I was over the moon because I had been wanting black laces in these sneaks for over a year, but had been unwilling to spend more that $1 for new ones. Seriously, how much better do they look?Live Seasoned Phu Chi Fah, Thailand 12-11-107The light in the bus terminal was just unreal, the whole weekend had been unreal. Can you spot the dog?

I’m off to write all weekend long.  I may take a break to watch my Panthers destroy Katie’s Broncos in the Super Bowl! By watch, I mean I’ll make finger food to enjoy while I pretend to cheer for the team from my home state.  Katie is probably just realizing now that the Broncos are playing in the big game…

live seasoned winter 15 dream office-100

Sarah Here :

Happy Friday!  This is the first full week that I’m home and working since mid-December, so it was all about writing lists, cleaning up my office, and getting the ball rolling. Sometimes it takes me a few days to get into the mindset of doing computer work.  Instead of writing or editing, I’ll find myself deleting every single unread email in my inbox or washing every piece of laundry in the house.  My body is definitely feeling it too.  When I lay down to go to bed at night, I find myself wanting Aleve or something else to numb the pain.  I find that if I run through a round of bedtime stretches to relieve lower back pain, I feel decompressed enough to relax into sleep.  My shoulders and neck feel most sore when I wake up, so I’m working on a little routine to loosen myself up in the morning before sitting back down for a day of editing, researching, and writing. Besides checking in with my clients and brainstorming ideas for the blog, this week has been nice and mellow and I’m hoping the weekend will be similar.  I think I’ll work through the weekend, but take a little break on Sunday to help Clean Up Chatham, a weekly lake cleanup event that a friend hosts.  I met that friend while volunteering on the Appalachian Trail last summer.  See, there are plenty of good folks out there, if you’re feeling a little tired of your friend circle, go find them! Have a great weekend! XO

This vacation has me exhausted and I know what you’re thinking, ‘oh booooohoooo, sleepy Sarah in sunny Florida,’ but I’ve been busy running around seeing the sights and I sure could use a little rest.  Don’t you always feel a little tired after a really great vacation?  This past week and a half I hopped around traveling East, West, North and South, from Orlando to Key West and back again.  I really am nodding off here, so below is a quick rundown of the highlights this time around. I’ll be sure to share some more images and details next week.

  • Seeing my childhood best friend and her beautiful new home – she is killin’ it! It pains me to live so far away from her.
  • Teaching sweet, young, autistic kids a bit of yoga.  We didn’t do too much, but I think they really enjoyed it!
  • Sleeping in an old Airstream trailer for a few nights. AirBnB is an amazing resource that never disappoints me.
  • Traveling to the Everglades for the first time in my life, even if I didn’t see any Alligators. We totally saw a manatee, which made up for the lack of gators.
  • Laughing at my brother after he was stung by a Portuguese Man of War. He just haaaaad to poke it.
  • Checking out the Florida Keys – another first for me.  Next time I go back, it will be to camp in one of the many state parks for a few weeks.
  • Seeing my Brazilian family and laughing away the days with them. My heart is so full, yet it will ache until I see them all again.
  • Spending quality one-on-one time with my brother and truly not having a care in the world for a dozen days.  Travel with your fam – you won’t regret it!

Sarah and I don’t have two bits to rub together today (hah!), but we are working behind the scenes scheming up some fun stuff for the season.

In the meantime, our sister Kris sent us a picture early this morning, and she’s totally winning the race on getting crafty with tea. Those are chamomile & lemon bath balms. They look fantastic, and we are so excited to do some product testing for her ;-).

Happy Friday!  It seems like each week that I’m home from my big adventure, I just get sleepier and sleepier.  I’m not sure if I keep taking on more work each week or if I really am just tired.  I feel like I did so much during my time in Nepal, especially during the yoga teacher training and trek, but here I am, just trying to work 8-10 hours a day and I’m exhausted.  Anyway, all that is to say, f yeahhh for Fridays.  I wanted to leave you with a few podcast episodes relating in some way to terrorism because it’s been a sh!t storm on social media this week and this is the only intelligent way I know how to enter the conversation. Go ahead and listen to one or all of these episodes this weekend.

My head has also been back and forth all week between living in the moment with the boys as we enjoy fall and prepare for Thanksgiving, and then listening to the radio and reading social media comments about the situation with ISIS and the confusion about who refugees are, why they are fleeing, why then need our compassion, and finally, how we can help. I am definitely not educated enough to speak on many of those points, but I do know that they are fellow humans in great need of help. If you are interested in learning more and are looking for ways to reach out, Girl’s Gone Child has a great post up with many thoughtful ideas.

Ack, this was one of those weeks when I was really playing adult. Checking things off the list every day, and it felt good, but also kept me hoping to find one really slow week before the holiday craziness hits. This week was all about the mundane errands. Taking cars to the garage, picking them up, taking them back, etc. Faxing forms, and then faxing them again, and being surprised that a simple email wouldn’t do. Trying to winterize the house because, BAM! we got our first snow of the season!

liveseasoned_fall2015_nov5b

Everyone in the house woke up excited yesterday to see the snow. Calder and I are planning a little trip up into the higher mountains again this weekend. We want to get Alex out on his skis, but we’re thinking of keeping it simple and mellow. Rather than go to a resort, we’re going to go to one of the state forests where Calder can put on his alpine touring gear and ski along beside Alex as he finds his balance on skis for the first time. Meanwhile, I’ll keep it really mellow and head out on the snowshoes with Luc in the Ergo.

Just like Kate, I’ve been adulting a lot this week.  Buying things like daylight bulbs, windshield wipers and draino and feeling pretty great about it 😉 It was cloudy every stinkin’ day this week, but I made use of the days by working pretty hard.  I squeezed in a few days at the pottery studio and darkroom. I also worked on an architectural shoot in an enormous mansion; it was different from my usual gigs and I really enjoyed it.  The only downfall? I have so many blog post ideas floating around in my little head, but no time to act on them.  Right now I’m about to head out the door for a weekend in Saxis.  Only a five hour drive separates me from a salty, beachy breeze.  Have a nice weekend!
